The purpose of this presentation is to examine Year 12 students’ interest in and valuing of English as a subject. One hundred and sixteen Year 12 students in traditional A English classes across two large co-educational New Zealand high schools (deciles 5 and 6) have filled out questionnaires as part of a much larger 12 month study. A preliminary analysis of questionnaire data provides interesting insights into how students rate their interest in English against their other Year 12 subjects, what aspects they find particularly interesting or particularly boring and whether they would select English if it was optional in Year 12. Attached is a pdf document briefly discussing the background to the research and the results.
